The weight loss effects of ECA EXTREME are primarily due to the ephedrine component. Ephedrine acts as both an α and β adrenergic agonist, stimulating the release of noradrenaline. Increased levels of circulating norepinephrine affect brown adipose tissue and skeletal muscle by increasing cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) levels. This produces a thermogenic effect, increasing the body’s heat production and, together with the remaining ingredients, increasing energy intake. However, the body’s negative feedback systems quickly kick in to normalise metabolism. This is manifested by an increase in the activity of the enzyme phosphodiesterase in cells and the release of prostaglandins at synaptic junctions, both of which deplete cAMP and mitigate the thermogenic effect. The release of adenosine in the brain further accelerates cAMP degradation. Caffeine inhibits the production of phosphodiesterase in the cell, thus slowing the degradation of cAMP. It also binds to and competitively inhibits adenosine receptors in the brain, thus stimulating the release of epinephrine and further increasing cAMP levels. Aspirin inhibits the production of prostaglandins outside the cell, which, together with caffeine, greatly prolongs the thermogenic effect and the increased metabolic rate by maintaining elevated cAMP levels. DMAA increases the levels of noradrenaline and dopamine in the human body, with noradrenaline acting both as a hormone and as a neurotransmitter.
